How much do you care? All our lives we are bound by what people think of us, what they like and dislike about us and most our of actions and reactions are hence governed by this very question. Why do we care what people think about us? Where ever on earth is ‘confidence’ and ‘self worth’.
People who live their lives by rules and ideas laid by other people often end being like the crowd. A friend of mine X, was extremely conscious of what people thought about her all the time. She would take hours to dress up for the smallest event. She would pick up each dress from the wardrobe and think 15 times what people will think if she wears a dress like that even if it were her favorite dress and made her look the best. She was guided by other people’s opinions and had no identity of herself. She saw herself the way others saw her. She had no perspective at all. I was so sure that she would end being governed by her husband, in-laws, friends, family, reflection, crowd, parrots, dog, neighbors etc etc…. because she had no opinion to call her own.
Contrary, is this other friend Y, who is from a small town, has hardly seen big bad world and is so comfortable in her own skin that she cares a damn about what people think of her. She will wear what she thinks is best for her, she does exactly what her hearts says, she will take everybody’s opinion not to form her own but to compare and see that hers was actually better! I love the way she is because she is an individual and not a sponger. She sees herself in a different light from others. And how is she different from X? Y has a self image clear in her head.
Self imaging is clearly how you see yourself physically and psychologically. It’s your opinion of who and what you are.
A person's self image is the mental picture, generally of a kind that is quite resistant to change, that depicts not only details that are potentially available to objective investigation by others (height, weight, hair color, sex, I.Q. score, etc.), but also items that have been learned by that person about himself or herself, either from personal experiences or by internalizing the judgments of others. – WIKIPEDIA
This is all that matters.. what you think about yourself. There are countless people in the world and those many numbers of brains and multiples of thoughts. One person by no chance can listen to all of them together. Hence no one person can be right about his opinion by any logic. So you cannot rest your life and your mind on something so fickle and irresolute. You may consider what other people think to form your own opinion but you cannot blindly follow them.
Well here is small test that I stumbled upon on the internet. Simply answer in true or false. Whatever you are unsure about, count that as false.
1. Other people are not better off or more fortunate than me
2. I accept myself as I am and am happy with myself

5. I feel valued and needed
6. I don't need others to tell me I have done a good job
7. Being myself is important
8. I make friends easily
9. I can accept criticism without feeling put down
10. I admit my mistakes openly

12. I always speak up for myself and put my views across
13. I am a happy, carefree person
14. I don't worry what others think of my views
